Earlier this week, Mommy took me to a place where you paint your own pottery. She thought I could paint an egg for Easter, starting a tradition we could do every year. Mommy also looked online and found a great way to make a butterfly using my handprints. Mommy set out with visions of the fun we would have and of the lovely pottery we would create; however, she realized it was a bad idea the moment we walked in the door. I wanted to touch everything, and being a pottery place, everything is fragile...not the best place for a two-year-old. Mommy held me (as I squirmed to get down) while we picked out our items to paint. She then strapped me in a booster seat (smart move) and handed me my brushes. I put a few strokes of paint on my egg and then was oh so ready to get down. Mommy painted my hand quickly and pressed it on the plate. She then filled in the rest of the butterfly. The entire process took probably five minutes. No doubt we were the fastest painters there. We get to pick up our masterpieces this Saturday!

In addition to the bluebonnets, another great thing about our house is it is across the street from an Austin landmark - The Dry Creek Cafe and Boat Dock. The name is deceiving because, other than some bags of chips, no food is served and there is no public boat dock...it's really just a beer joint. It's been around for over 50 years -long before any houses were built along our road - and owned (and until just a couple of years ago also run by) 95 year old Sarah Ransom. Sarah is really makes makes the place legendary. She is one ornery lady, and you can't really call yourself an Austinite unless you have been yelled at by her...for not bringing your empty beer bottle back to the counter, for asking if she serves wine, for just about anything. Many of our neighbors think the Dry Creek is an eyesore, but we love it. On any given night, we can sit on our deck, watch the sunset and listen to Willie playing on the juke box across the street....It doesn't get much better (or more Austin) than that!

Enough, already!

Each spring, it is a requirement for all children in Texas to have their photos taken sitting amongst the state flower. One of the best things about our house is we have bluebonnets that bloom in our front yard, so we don't have to travel far. I don't like to sit still, so it was a challenge, but it had to be done ---it's a REQUIREMENT!

Easter Egg Hunt

I went over to my friend Richard's house today for an Easter egg hunt. I had just discovered a basket of toys inside when it was time to search for the eggs, so I wasn't interested in collecting the eggs (unlike some children, I CANNOT be distracted when I am focused on something)...all the eggs in my basket came from my nice friends who shared their eggs with me. Thanks, guys! There were also some fun art projects - building a nest for our eggs out of clay and twigs and decorating a foam Easter egg with stickers. Thanks, Richard (and your Mommy!) for a wonderful morning!

Fancy Do

It's no secret that kids act differently (usually worse) around their parents than others. Some sugar-coat this by saying it shows the children know they are loved so deeply by their parents that they can show their true selves (usually ornery). On a typical morning, Mommy gets me dressed and attempts to do my hair in a style other than my usual bow-on-the-side do. I give her a true "NO" (as opposed to the "NO" that actually means "YES") and I end up with a bow-on-the side do. This morning, Mommy left me with Connie. When Mommy got home, here's the do I was sporting - seven gathered ponytails across the top of my head, finished off with a pretty bow. Connie told Mommy I sat in her lap for ten minutes while she worked on my hair. Mommy just shook her head...

April Fools

The great thing is there is enough time in my day that I don't have to decide! I can wear it all!

Round and Round and Round They Go!

A typical outing for me is going to the park, preschool, swimming, zoo, etc...but tonight we branched out and went to the Roller Derby. Yes, Roller Derby! Today my Aunt Celia came to Austin to visit me and to go to the Roller Derby competition between the Cherry Bombs and the Holy Rollers. The daughter of a good friend of hers is "Lady Libertine" on the Holy Rollers. The rules for the teams are quite similar to rules for a two-year-old - no biting, no pushing, etc... - and if they are broken, time-outs follow. We thought it sounded like fun, so we went also. It was fun, but a bit too loud and raucous for me, so we left after only a little while. While we were there, we saw and met some interesting people! The Roller Derby is doing its part in the "Keep Austin Weird" effort! BTW- the Cherry Bombs won.
